French Red Shallots

French Red Shallots are mainly used for pickling and garnishing your favourite meat dishes and roasts etc. Shallots have a distinct onion based flavor though not as strong and are used a lot in salads and for bottling. They can be used in replace of an onion in most dishes. Shallots are very quick to multiply and can be planted by pressing into well worked soil until half the bulb is showing above the ground. Space bulbs 5 - 6 cm apart and feed with Fiesta Bulb Food at planting time, and again in early Spring. Water only if conditions are drying off. Lift in January when the tops start to die off and lie on the ground to dry. When the tops are crunchy and brittle [i.e. dry] store in a cool airy place.
