An outstanding new American raised variety producing giant juicy tender stems in profusion. Easily grown with 3-4 times more production than is usual. These established 1 year old crowns, whether small or large will grow and produce very well in the home garden. Asparagus are true perennials and are almost everlasting in the garden with established beds, lasting at least 20 years and more. Select a sunny permanent position and be sure all couch, grass, roots, oxalis, etc are completely removed. The bed should be raised 10 - 12cm above the surrounding garden to ensure good drainage. If available, work into the ground compost, stable or fowl manure, or a good dressing of blood and bone fertilizer.
To plant the crowns, open up a 15cm wide trench 7-8cm deep and place crowns 45cm apart with roots spread out star fashion. The soil should then be replaced covering the crowns, 6-8cm deep. Rows should be 60 - 80cm apart. Apply fertilizer in early Autumn about 60 grams per square meter, and in early Spring a boost of Sulphate of Ammonia - 60g per square meter, this further boosting production. In the first year cut spears for 2 weeks only - then allow plants to go to fern. Each year the cutting ceases in early December when plants are then allowed to run to fern. In the Autumn remove all fern when it has completely yellowed off.
